On Sunday, as rain fell at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, the 79-year-old president was about to board Air Force One for his long-awaited trip to the Middle East. This visit comes at a time when a US-brokered peace deal between Hamas and Israel nears finalisation. A video circulating online shows Trump stepping out of his car with an umbrella. While walking to the plane, he had trouble closing it. The president looked a bit awkward as he struggled with the umbrella’s mechanism before an aide came to help. Even though it was quickly resolved, the clip spread widely online. One post on X (formerly Twitter) joked, “Trump can’t close his own umbrella. Embarrassing for our nation."
The umbrella moment quickly turned into memes, and people on social media had a lot to say. Some made funny comments, while others defended him with reasons. One user wrote, “Be nice. Some things are harder when you’re really old." Another joked, “But he can do everything else, even world peace." Some comments were playful, like, “If you ask him, he’ll say nobody knows more about umbrellas than he does.” Others pointed out, “It’s not that he can’t; he just doesn’t think he has to.” Some dismissed the fuss entirely, saying, “He clearly closes it as he’s getting on Air Force One. Trump has had trouble with umbrellas before. In October 2018, while heading to a rally in Illinois, he struggled to close one. At Joint Base Andrews, he tried to shield himself from the rain but eventually gave up and left the umbrella outside after a few seconds. More recently, in April 2025, Trump had trouble fitting his umbrella through a plane doorway before handing it to a staff member while leaving for Mar-a-Lago. These moments show that umbrellas seem to remain a small but recurring challenge for him.
